National ASK Day

Postby Stoley_XD on Fri Jun 21, 2013 5:58 am

I'm watching channel 5 news this morning and they come on and say it's a National ASK day and you're being urged to ask if there are guns in the homes where your children will be playing
Who the hell comes up with this sh*t?

My solution to that is to never have kids.

I never mind if one of my kids' friends' parents ask me about guns. Give us a good chance to talk about laws, carry permits, cowboy action shooting, high power, etc. :D

What I resent is when a stranger who has no vested interest in what happens in my home asks me about my firearms....or tries to legislate how I can store them.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

I don't have kids to worry about, and I agree with photogpat's sentiments, however if the ulterior motive was truly the safety of visiting children- the discussion should then be focussed on things like pets, swimming pools, and tools (hand and power). I pretty sure they pose a greater risk, and are the cause of far more casualties than all the highly publicized firearms' incidents.

In my neighborhood, the question is not "if" the question is "what kind?"

Can't let the kids play with kids who parents have Glocks :D

I thought we were for this? Communication isn't exactly a bad thing, and if you find out that the home your kids are playing at doesn't take gun safety seriously, at least you're talking about it.

There was a post about this a while back. This isn't a horrible thing.

Its a good thing to know what your kids are doing regardless (or irregardless).

I don't think this is an issue of responsible parenting or gun safety. I think the problem is the left media's reenforcement of a negative stereotype that firearms in the home are more dangerous than household chemicals, matches or 5 gallon buckets.

Statistically, firearms in the home are way down the list of what parents should be worrying about.

Communication is good. My concern is how this could be used against gun owners. Parents want to know if their kids are safe at another family's house. Excellent. Now, can those same parents be trusted with the information they have just been given about those things their wonderful news program insists are evil?

Growing up, my dad didnt want people to know what he had, he just disnt talk about it because the wrong thing said to another parent could lead to a family feud. He didnt want us kids to know either, as one word at school and next thing you know the clschool district is breathing down his neck.

We only saw the guns when they were being worked on or packed for a match. The only exception was the occassional one that was non functional (damaged, rusted ones he got from a friend, missing parts, etc).

Ask if they drink, smoke, drive after ANY drinking, have all their knives and any dangerous tools locked up. If not WHY not ?

I ask questions / get to know parents-homeowners where my kids may spend time, I guess I wouldn't explicitly call out guns as the first thing on my list of concerns (being a murderer-rapist/defiler of pets are higher on my list right out of the gate) but if I get on to the topic of shooting and they indicate there are guns in the house I would broach the subject while offering an explanation of how I have approached the same in my home.

I changed my gun storage methods when I had kids and have educated and tested/reinforced with mine what to do in someone else's house if they find a firearm. I also offer to take other parents and their kids to the range to show them firearm/safe handling basics when the opportunity comes up.

I am fine with the concept of reminding parents about the safety of their kids (when they are not texting/on the phone and driving with 3 kids in the back seat) but I find the "ASK" focus on guns overly narrow given the other more statistically significant dangers to kids in most households... Remember people, half the population will always be "below average" and need lots of reminders (ever been in line at the Post Office?)... :)

I declare today a National ASK Day for mind corruption.

We need to ask if there's anything in the home that has to do with killing, incest, rape, destruction, stealing, lust, adultery, etc. If they have a TV, or worse yet, a bible, no parent in good conscious could let their child in that home.
