Minnesota Orchestra

Postby LePetomane on Fri Oct 04, 2013 9:17 am

The decimation of the Minnesota Orchestra appears to be complete. I'm curious as to what the outcry would be if the same happened to the Vikings or Twins.

I'm no supporter of any of them personally, but people actually do attend Twins' and Vikings' events; unlike the MN Orchestra that some want to have around, if for no other reason than to talk about how much they appreciate having it around.

I like classical & jazz - and went to the Orchestra somewhat frequently. This is a pretty major loss.

I used to go alot more when I worked downtown but its a hassle to get there now. The pay controversy for the Orchestra seems to be a microcosm of the theories of capitalism around value of work. Right now the "market" doesn't believe that a 3rd chello should be paid $120K but would be willing to pay $90K. If the Orchestra is losing money and they close the doors, then the Chellist gets paid $0 or whatever unemployment is these days. Pure economics. You get paid what others believe you should be paid.

I've been to one orchestra event in 30 years. Never been to a Twins game nor to a Vikings game. Good luck to all of them. As long as they don't cost me any money, I'm all in favor of all three being driven by the market.

Only problem with them"going away" is its not like you'd get a check back in the mail for what your taxes contributed or that you'll see a drop in your taxes for whatever the subsidy was. I don't think it will fold up but I think the high salary people will be shaken out of the organization and the overall cost will go down. You and I won't see it and you'll likely not know the difference. Only the hard core "fan's" will claim that they will be able to tell the difference. I doubt most of them could really tell the difference if they were blindfolded between the old and new Orchestra.

Some of those who left were principals. To make a comparison, the Minnesota Vikings even with one of the best running backs in the NFL are pathetic. Take away him and they are even worse.
The Minnesota Orchestra was once a world class organization. Can't say that about the Vikings (losers of 4 Super Bowls) or Timberwolves and Wild, both perpetual losers. This area has pumped more tax $$$'s into the professional sports teams with no return than they have into the orchestra.

I also agree with being driven by the market, but I think we're all diminished a bit by not having an orchestra.

You don't have to be a liberal, or a tree hugger, just a music-lover. Human history is studded with incredible works of music, and being able to enjoy this live is important to me. I'm sorry to see what has happened to them.

Most of which was written by people who lived and died poor. If a fat govt. check is the only way to keep the "incredible works of music" coming, then I'll be fine listening to the crickets.

Don't confuse creation with performance.

I'm not suggesting that we subsidize either, only that we're diminished by the lack of a performing orchestra.

The evolution of our society has many tragic components. We say that, our parents said that, our grandparents said that.
