Sounds like F.U.D. to me.
"them" = "who?" exactly? Pretty broad stroke. I'd rather focus on individuals vs. generalizations, exact situations vs. wild scenarios, and so on. Since Sean Penn is the primary individual mentioned in this thread, let's start with him. Do you or anyone else have any substantiated and verifiable proof that he's "always buzzed up on psych meds" and "a threat to society"? Also, please define what kind of threat, how so exactly?
As for Sean destroying his guns, what business is it of anyone else what he does with his property that he legally paid for and owns? If he breaks some laws in the process of doing so on his legally owned private land; then that's the job of Law Enforcement, not you, me or anyone else.
What will really tweak your brain is the fact that he destroyed GUNS, but if he destroyed CARS, you probably wouldn't care as much. Why is that? Isn't ALL property equal? If someone is going to get bent out of shape about another individual destroying their legally owned property on their own legally owned property, then why should it matter what that property is, be it a gun, car, or anything else?
Guns are not a religion. They are a tool. Nothing more and nothing less. To me, it appears that many people worship them, and to destroy one is equal to an abominable sin of some unwritten kind. Why is that? Adherents to one of the three primary Abrahamic religions get twisted up if you draw a picture of their prophet; rioting and ready to kill for a perceived "insult".... thank goodness most gun owners aren't at that point yet when someone legally destroys a legally owned gun on their own property,.... however, I see the same foundations in fundamentalism and the potential for fanaticism in both adherents to that certain religion, and also by some gun owners. It's here I must self-censor and not go into individuals within both areas for fear of the mighty banhammer being slammed down upon me, so I shall let this point rest as it is now.
I'm sure if I knew you and your life better, I could come up with something you recently did and use it for a real world example of how wrong the idea is. Let's say you just tossed out a perfectly good electric drill....is it my place to complain about it and tell you what to do with your legally owned property? No, of course not. So why then do some people feel it is right to tell others what to do with their own property?
