I don't know why it wouldn't be true, and if it wasn't for the drugs, alcohol and erratic behavior, they'd probably still be there.

I'm also sure there's more to the story.

I read a book some 20 years ago by Tim O'brien called "the things they carried". Semi-autobiographical about the Vietnam War. There was a chapter in there about a Green Beret who had done something very similar. I wonder if that's the inspiration behind this story? Also, IMO, one of the very best books ever written. Ymmv

A pity. It sounds like this guy was doing things the smart way. But the Pentagon still thinks the way to go is to prop up someone calling themselves the president of Afghanistan and drop bombs on possibly the right targets.

The guy also reminds me a little bit of the late John Paul Vann, the subject of the book "A Bright Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam" by Neil Sheehan.
