Maybe I'm naive, but I can't shake the feeling that this was avoidable. I understand that the place where this happened was some kind of tourist stop? Firearms aren't F'ing toys!
I recently took my 15 year old son (who is 6'3" and weighs 230) shooting for his first time out. I waited this long to do so until I felt he had the maturity and ability to respect the weapon I was about to place into his hands. As it was, he was only allowed to load and fire one round at a time until I was confident in his ability to manage the recoil. Then he moved up to two rounds at a time and so on. If I were ever to put a weapon like a full auto UZI into his hands, it would be under the same conditions as how he learned on my pistols; start with one round and slowly working his way up to two, then three, etc, etc.
"The man who lies asleep will never waken fame, and his desire and all his life drift past him like a dream, and the traces of his memory fade from time like smoke in air, or ripples on a stream." -Dante Alighieri
