Old news, none of their business, I might ask them something like "so did you cheat on your exams at college?" much more pertinant to my heath IMO. My wife thinks I can be rude at times, she is probably correct.

I've been trying to think of the best reply to convey why asking the question is improper. How about something along this line?

"How is using your professional position to ask a partisan political question not a breach of medical ethics? And if you claim it is based on health concerns, why have you not inquired about other potentially dangerous tools in the home? MYOB Doc."

Kinda wordy and awkward. Wordsmithing welcome.

Not rude enough for me, but you would probably do better than me.

Actually my prievious Dr knew I had guns, I was shooting enough to need to get tested for lead now and then. This is the only question about guns I see as valid.

Up here in the wilds of Minnesota they probably asume we own guns.

I've never been asked, face-to-face. I've had the question appear on forms I've been asked to fill out.

I've simply answered: "refused".

I was asked, "Do you feel safe in the home?" y the nurse as he was interviewing me prior to my last colonoscopy. Apparently some of these questions are mandated by the nanny state of Minnesota.

With the move not sure what I will answer... Maybe: yes, I am pretty sure I am preped for the Zombie Apocalypse?

Doctors Asking Parents about gun ownership

Postby Ron Burgundy on Tue Dec 02, 2014 5:36 pm

To the collective group - why wouldn't you answer the question honestly?

My Dr asked me when I asked to have my lead levels checked. It was a very pleasant conversation about the shooting sports. Based on his interest, he may even one day go shooting himself or at least not think of gun owners as weirdos.

Look at the growth of new shooters over the last few years. We're growing. It is not taboo to own guns.

I would not answer any questions from a doctor or nurse regarding firearms. It's none of their business.

Do some research on Vivek Murthy MD, Obama's choice for Surgeon General. This guy sees guns as a public health issue and a lot of other things. He is a scary guy.

I had my annual physical recently.

No questions about guns, but they asked more than once about my drinking....

I agree completely. It's no one's business but mine. It's a problem with a very simple solution., just leave the question blank on the pre-visit form, or decline to answer the question if they ask you. Gun ownership is one of many things that I don't want in my medical record and I either make sure things like that don't get in there in the first place or I go in myself and delete them.
