The widespread and highly visible GLEE of the anti-gunners was disgusting. They'd rather harp on this strong woman who made a mistake, than allow other women the chance to defend themselves.

She's the exception that proves the rule anyways - 99.999999% of gun owners didn't have ANYTHING bad happen to them.

Don't know for sure, but one senario might be that she keeps her gun in her purse, mindlessly set it down within easy access to the child (yep, BIG no-no), kid goes into purse looking for candy or whatever and finds the gun...thinks it's a toy....and...well.....just a theory.
