The private information of thousands of California firearms instructors was accidentally released by the state late last year in response to a journalist’s Freedom of Information request.
The data request was made in August, when a reporter for Southern California Public Radio (KPCC), an NPR affiliate, sought all information on Firearms Safety Certifications available from the California Department of Justice.

The information was released in October, and a clerical error gave the reporter wide access to the personal information of 3,424 firearms instructors -- whose dates of birth, driver’s license numbers and California identification numbers were handed over, ...................

I bet it was an "error".
I will never apologize for being an American.

I doubt if there will be an apology. Staff will be required to attend additional training in privacy protection to be held at a nearby ski resort.

You have to suppress your gag reflex and monitor the Liberal Media to make sure you understand how they are thinking and know their motivations. Honestly, I find it intellectually lazy to only listen to the echo chamber of conservative media.

Not a big fan of NPR/ MPR mostly out of principal due to them being gov't funded.
And, while they're not city pages, their bias factors heavily in their reporting.
And then there's that Keillor oaf...

However-

The reporter did nothing illegal. He asked for info about certifications-not instructors.

The state screwed up.
There has been no indication the information was released by the reporter.

The reporter ASKED for the data.

The reporter had an agenda for a story.

Eh forget it.

I haven't seen large format crayons in some time to explain **** like this to people any more.

what I dislike about data breaches is that the entity who failed to secure the sensitive information "magnanimously" provides one to three years of identity theft protection free of charge.

That information after 3 years still can be used to steal your identity. If you lose someone's sensitive data, you should have to pay for identity theft protection for a lifetime. A person's birthday doesn't change nor their social security number.

As if a miscreant will say "darn, the information I stole is no good for three years, I'll just erase it from my computer" nope, they can just wait 3 years and 1 day to do their bad things.

I don't think anyone is surprised that NPR would be working on an anti 2A story. Dog bites man. I think the real story is that the information shared wasn't handled correctly or the inference that this information is classified, privileged or protected. Again, I am not sure anyone is shocked by bureaucrats messing up. Is the assertion that the information was intentionally leaked for some nefarious purpose. What might that purpose be? Targets for roaming band of protestors, liberal hit squads. I'm interested in the theories.

Given the fact that these instructors got licensed to instruct, I assume that they are already known to some sector of the public through advertising of services, if not,I'd say they have a poor business model.
