Congress Passes Bill For Sale Of Milsurp 1911 Pistols Through CMP
The 2018 National Defense Authorization Act was approved Thursday to include a plan to transfer the U.S. Army’s remaining stock of .45 ACP M1911A1 pistols to the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Added as an amendment while the NDAA was in debate in the House Armed Service Committee, it would speed up the transfer of potentially the largest remaining stock of military surplus World War II-era handguns in government hands to the public. The mammoth legislation, which outlines $700 billion in overall defense spending, cruised to final approval on a voice vote in the Senate and now heads to President Trump.

“I call upon the President to sign this important legislation into law—and in doing so acknowledge that this is the level of defense spending necessary to meet current threats, prepare for the challenges of an increasingly dangerous world, and keep faith with our men and women in uniform,” said U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the Armed Services Committee chairman.

On the handguns headed to the CMP, the bill instructs the Secretary of the Army to conduct a two-year pilot program that will transfer “not less than 8,000 surplus caliber .45 M1911/M1911A1 pistols” in 2018 with a cap of no more than 10,000 transferred per fiscal year. The program would then be reviewed to ensure the guns were sold by CMP in accordance with applicable federal laws and evaluate its cost to the Army.

Poking around the interwebs, I found one estimate suggesting there may be 100,000 made available.
I wonder what the status of the Korean/ offshore Garands is.

Be legal to purchase a handgun from an FFL; they will be sold/ transferred through CMP affiliated gun clubs, I believe.
Those clubs may have membership requirements to do business through them. I'm guessing most clubs are CMP affiliated.

I haven't seen anything that said Dakota Gun Club is. I was thinking Rip Van Winkle had a way to join but I lost the form I printed off before.

Are you perhaps confusing Dakota with the Post 435 gun club? Mark/ RvW is pretty involved with the latter. They are a CMP club.

Here's a link to a membership app: http://www.post435gunclub.org/downloads/cmp_app.pdf
There's also this: http://www.post435gunclub.org/downloads/2017_rev2_435_Gun_Club_NEW_Membership_Application.pdf

Consult with Mark as to how to proceed.

Won't they be sold the same way as the garands? Those do not go through clubs. You have to be a member of an affiliated club and done an organized shooting event to qualify but once you do you order direct and it shows up at your door.

My mistake. I thought the club was more involved,
I do wonder if handguns will be handled similarly.

Great. Rattle trap 1911's for everyone!

If they are like the ones we had before the Beretta, I'll only pay 200 for one.

I’m just saying I belong to Dakota and they aren’t CMP as far as I know.

That’s what I was looking for on post 435.

But who would't want to greatly over pay for a piece of history. ( note the sarcasm)

The cmp has, imo, done a phenomenal job with the garands. There is no better deal on one out there than through them and you can get them at various levels from rattle trap to basically new. I suspect they will do similar with the 1911s and rebuild, refinish, etc.
