MEH - In the world of anything is too much, I would agree a poor decision, but I doubt its worth hyperventilating over. Classic self preservation move and a CYA payment to corrupt politicians. Is it great, no, but without knowing what was promised for the contribution and whether there was a pay off for the contribution, it is pretty much how influence peddling works. Illinois politics are about as notoriously dirty as they get. If you want to play in that arena, you have to be willing to get dirty. I don't agree with it, but I understand it. You pay for an exemption to some goofy law/ordinance, problem is, you can't rely on they guy you paid off to deliver on his end. Sounds like they may have been double crossed - the politician didn't deliver on his end. That is the risk of this kind of pay off - what's your leverage? They should have done it old school - send a hooker and a surveillance team to his hotel and get photos or get a bribe on tape...............something that gives you real leverage.
