Aurora Shooting: Another law enforcement failure

Martin purchased the gun that was used in the shooting in 2014, police said. Ziman said Martin purchased the weapon after being issued a firearm owner's identification card and after passing the initial background check.

ILLINOIS WORKPLACE SHOOTING LEAVES 5 DEAD, SHOOTER KILLED, OFFICIALS SAY

Five days after taking possession of the weapon, a Smith and Wesson 40 caliber handgun, Martin tried to obtain a concealed carry permit.

But during the fingerprinting and background process it was discovered that he had a felony conviction for assault in Mississippi, police said. The date of conviction was in 1995. Police said the conviction would not necessarily have shown up on the background check for a gun owner's license.

Because of the conviction, Martin's concealed carry permit was rejected and his license to own a weapon was revoked by Illinois State Police, police said.

Ziman said as part of the investigation into the shooting, investigators would try to determine why Martin never surrendered his weapon to police as he should have.(emphasis mine)

Not sure you should really be holding anyone accountable except the shooter.

The only thing government ever seems to do well is waste our money and trample our rights.

Correct.

It’s also another instance showing how useless background checks are.

I did not think Illinois had a permit process that allowed concealed carry?

There was a supreme court decision a few years back that forced them to change that. My understanding is that the permit process in Illinois is kind of a pain compared to ours, but that it does now exist.

McDonald v. Chicago

More difficult to get and MANY locations are forbidden to carry.
Because I care, I carry.

I agree that the individual is ultimately responsible for their actions, however, the government mandated "safeguards" and all the legislation doesn't mean anything without enforcement. The letter sent to the killer demanding he surrendered his illegal firearms was just a letter. It appears no effort was made beyond the administrative minimum.

My point is that passing new laws when the laws already existing are either ignored or incompetently enforced will have the same effect as believing words on a piece of paper have the power to stop bullets.

We don't have a gun problem as much as we have an imbalance in enforcement and a population that seems less and less capable of dealing with lifes disappointments. No coping skills, lack of faith, break down of the family, whatever-it appears we have some very disturbed people running around among us.

Unfortunately this is going to pass by quickly by the media

Doesn’t fit the narrative

Black guy shooting white people and gun laws not working means sweep this under the rug

Oh, I think they will use this as a stat on a "permit holder" committing a crime.

The current laws should have denied him a gun people failed as usual so how could more laws help?
