I've heard that for years. I've also heard from people well versed in the legalities of self defense say, it wouldn't be, and hasn't been an issue.

I read an article by Massad Ayoob where the prosecutor was trying to make just that case about a reloader. I believe Massad was an expert witness for the defense. I do not recall the outcome.

I was thinking Ayoob was among those downplaying the reload issue. Since I wasn't certain, i didn't use his name.
From what I recall, the thinking was, if it comes down, or gets as far as the ammo used, you're probably screwed anyway.
A reference to some specific case law would be enlightening to see if the ammo played a significant role in the legal proceedings.

Here's hoping none of us ever has to find out.

Just because there is no case law on it doesn’t mean that it didn’t enter in to the thinking of the prosecutor on charging or arresting someone. Given how many plea bargains go on, it could be something that has been used to coerce a guilty to lesser charges plea.

For me, it’s not the optimal way to deal with it, but self defense ammo is whatever the cops are using, or as close as I can get, with the justification that it is what law enforcement feels is appropriate.

Handloads are made to duplicate the SD ammo for practice, but I don’t use it for defense. If I did, that would be my argument (it duplicates what the cop on the street uses to defend themselves and the public).... but I suspect if you use AP ammo like some specialist police units, you would get charged even though AP is much less traumatic to tissue than the cheap deer ammo.

Compared to...

High end self defense ammo

Premium mid bore ammo

Match ammo

"Safari" caliber ammo

And if you really want sticker shock look at out of production stuff like .318 WR or the Newton calibers.

Then there is DD ammo....
