Really?? Either reporting is very skewed here or someone made some bad choices. Hopefully there is a lot more to the story that explains the *why* part.

http://www.startribune.com/1-person-shot-after-stolen-car-being-chased-by-police-in-st-paul-crashes/508647602/

A suspected car thief running from St. Paul police after crashing the vehicle was shot and wounded by a homeowner late Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The gunfire erupted in the 600 block of Cook Avenue on St. Paul's East Side and left the young man wounded in the yard, according to police.

A man with a gun was with the suspect when police arrived, and he identified himself to officers as the homeowner, police said, adding that the man was cooperating with the investigation.

On the front of the homeowner's house was a sign in the window that read, "No trespassing. Violators will be shot. Survivors will be shot again."

Stop with the goofy signs, people!!

His attorney is probably not particularly pleased with his window decoration.

Per the 'St Paul' paper, the shooter wasn't arrested or taken into custody. The shooting took place inside a police perimeter.
That suggests there may have been some more to the story than what either paper is reporting.

My guess the guy who got shot was armed.

Yep; I've never seen a sign in a window change the facts of what transpired.

ETA:
The shooter has now been arrested.
Police brought Vincent N. Trotter, 36, in for questioning about what led to the shooting at approximately 10 a.m. in the Payne-Phalen area. He was booked into the Ramsey County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday.

Shooter has now been arrested and charged. And number 11 had an 'expert' talking about "stand your ground" and "castle doctrine" on the 10 o'clock news (like they were the same thing).

You are correct. But it can change juries minds...

People are free to put up whatever stupid signs and stickers they want as far as I’m concerned but I agree that it can definitely affect the outcome of a case where the jury has to make a subjective judgment over whether there was malice or bad intent in some form. So while it may not have anything to do with the facts of the event, it surely can affect the final outcome.

It’s dumb to put any gun related sticker on a car too in my opinion. Have a brother in law who put a SIG sticker on his truck that came with his gun. I asked him why he feels compelled to advertise that he might have a gun inside. Someone sees you park at a post office or other federal office, outside a stadium or sports venue, school, or other gun free zone, they know you’re not taking a gun with you. So they know there’s a good chance if you had a gun with you, you left it in your vehicle. Easy window break and it’s yours. Because I’d venture a guess that most guys also don’t lockbox their handguns in their vehicle and just throw it in the center console instead. There’s no sound reason to advertise on your home or vehicle that you’re a gun owner.

I agree with everything you wrote. We should be able to post signs and stickers without consequences. But because that’s just not the case, it’s prudent not to do so. Same goes for wearing gun related gear in public. I will sometimes wear a hat or 2 shirt, but am always weary that the tough guys out there will someday decide to “test” me. Since I’m the most conflict averse guy around when it comes to dealing with strangers, I find myself wearing that stuff less and less. Again, it shouldn’t be that way, but it is.

Funny thing is I work with equipment that we have to have signs (stickers) warning what may happen and in a lawsuit if they aren’t there then we have a less favorable outcome. This guy posts a clear warning sign and now he may have a less favorable outcome.

There are some real quirks with warning labels.
For instance, I was advised that having a 'Beware of Dog' sign has the potential to make one more responsible for a dog bite, because the warning sign presents clear evidence the owner knew the dog was a hazard.

The same could happen to a gun owner who is demonized by the prosecutor for loading his own ammunition.
