Potentially right direction in gun crime deterrence

I think this is a step in the right direction... Enforce the laws already on the books and punish folks who are violating them. Would be nice if this drives things in the right direction instead of the continual pushes for more new laws that only punish law-abiding folks.

As part of the program, U.S. prosecutors will coordinate with state and local law enforcement officials to consider potential federal charges when a suspect is arrested for weapons possession, is believed to have used a gun to commit a violent crime or drug-trafficking offense or is suspected of being a violent gang member.

...

The program “will strengthen our efforts to reduce gun violence by allowing the federal government and our state and local partners to better target offenders who use guns in crimes and those who try to buy guns illegally,” Barr said.

Obviously this won't stop the push because crime is not what the actual drivers of these laws want, but it may reduce their stated basis for the laws.

Isn’t this similar to the FPSRussia stuff where the locals couldn’t get him on marijuana charges so the feds came and did it instead?
