Well that's one reason I've never pursued a career or hobby in kidnapping. I'm glad no one else got hurt , there was plenty of opportunity for collateral damage.

Are they allowed private ownership of guns in Brazil?

Knowing Brazil, it really depends on "who" you are. I'm assuming that if this kid was worth abducting, the family has money and connections. I think abductions are still fairly common there although lower than they used to be.

The "mom" was an off-duty police officer.

That is my point. Would a regular citizen be able to do the same?

It is great that someone was there to take out the threat. No one wants kids kidnapped. But lets look at the situation. Lets say that a state manages a total gun ban with the exception of police such appears to be the current laws in Brazil. And this occurs. It would seem more of an argument for the left at that point. "See the police were there when you needed them" "Average citizens have no need for guns" "Only special people who are in our control, err I mean highly trained should have guns".

Until the ruling class decides it's just as dangerous for them to allow off duty police to have them.

Not now.

Maybe someday.

Brazil seems to be moving in the right direction.

Sorry, I don't count police officers being the only ones to have guns as freedom. If we get to this point we lost long ago.
