A healthy skepticism of police accounts of shootings is only prudent given the amount of ass-covering that was s.o.p. for decades. The whole legend of Ma Barker was made up out of whole cloth by the FBI to justify the trigger-happy killing of an old woman.

"Ma" Barker's sons were heavily involved in criminal gang activity. She herself however is now thought to have been guilty of nothing worse than providing safe houses for them. She was killed when the FBI raided one such house hoping to capture the entire gang but only Barker and one of her sons were there at the time. He initiated a shoot-out which ended after FBI forces riddled the house with gunfire.
