The Montgomery County Police Department said in a news release Friday that Duncan Socrates Lemp, 21, “confronted” police who were executing a “high risk” search warrant at the Potomac home early Thursday. They said a tactical unit member fatally shot Lemp around 4:30 a.m.
According to police, the officers were “following up on a complaint from the public that Lemp, though prohibited, was in possession of firearms.”

I hate stories like this. A police shooting, a grieving family and a lot of wild speculation.
While I want to be outraged by this story, I have a feeling the deceased young man may have been, just turning his life around.

So the article makes it sound like he was sound asleep and the cops just started shooting up the house. I don’t think so. Somebody watched too many movies.

The police say he was a prohibited person, and that he was awake and confronted the police.
The article says he had no criminal record, and witnesses say he was asleep.
Somebody is lying.

Seems like there is more to the story. Poorly written articles like this are proof that real journalistic skill is long gone. You are left with more questions than answers.

Update: Officer-Involved Shooting in Potomac; Additional Information Released

Upon entrance by officers into Lemp’s bedroom, Lemp was found to be in possession of a rifle and was located directly in front of the interior bedroom entrance door.
During the service of the search warrant a device was discovered affixed to the inside frame of the exterior door leading to Lemp’s bedroom. Montgomery County Fire Marshals responded in order to render the device safe. The device was designed as a “booby trap” intended to detonate a shotgun shell at the direction of anyone entering through the exterior door into Lemp’s bedroom.

If true, it would justify the shooting.
But if it were true, there'd be evidence to support it.
And as bent as I think MD cops too often are, I don't think they'd make up a story that could be disproved by the evidence, if the evidence wasn't there. It's too easy to make up a story that can't be disproved.

If a SWAT team were to concoct a story to justify their actions, I suspect it would likely involve the creative narration of split-second events, not something that would involve another agency outside the police department.
Further I have to believe body cams were worn.

Contrary to some information reported to the media, the same occupant also indicated that Lemp was out of the bed and standing directly in front of the interior bedroom door at the time the officers made entry into the bedroom.
So much for being shot while still in bed.

However severe the mistrust of LE as an arm of a sinister government, these are still human beings in uniform and although mistakes are made, something like this would surprise me find out it was an unwarranted case of murder. Families, at the urging of their attorneys, are trained to spew a narrative that will provide the highest level of "justice" that translates to everyone getting paid.

A healthy skepticism of police accounts of shootings is only prudent given the amount of ass-covering that was s.o.p. for decades. The whole legend of Ma Barker was made up out of whole cloth by the FBI to justify the trigger-happy killing of an old woman.
