Trump pulls ATF nominee from consideration after GOP senators expressed frustration over gun answers
The White House announced that it was withdrawing Chuck Canterbury from being the nominee to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

The withdrawal was announced to Congress on Tuesday. Canterbury is the former president of the Fraternal Order of Police and was nominated by the president to head the ATF last year. During his confirmation hearing last July, Canterbury upset some Republican lawmakers for being evasive about his answers on gun control.

It doesn't actually say which way he leans; what is the position of "the Fraternal Order of Police"?

From: https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/trump-pulls-atf-nominee-from-consideration-after-gop-senators-expressed-frustration-over-gun-answers (same article as above) -

During his hearing, Canterbury was repeatedly asked about his personal views on major gun control issues, but he only responded by saying he couldn’t express views outside the Fraternal Order of Police’s positions.

Appears at first to be the devil we don't know.
'Googling' around the interwebs, this guy is not out friend. In the past, as head of FOP he's:

* supported Universal Background Checks,
* "Assault Weapon" ban,
* he wants law enforcement to have “better access to mental health records for keeping guns out of the wrong hands.”
* used his official position as President of FOP to oppose constitutional carry
* He testified in favor of Sonia (“the right to possess a gun is clearly not a fundamental right) Sotomayor for U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

Makes one wonder how, and why he got the nomination.

In fairness to the FOP, it all seems the various lodges do not march in lock step on the issue of gun control.

Looks like we "dodged a bullet" on this one. Though the 10 month delay is weird and seems onerous.

I remember this guy... The bumpstock ban plus this guy reaffirmed my thinking that Trump was secretly anti-2A and possibly even a RINO/leftist plant...

I don't believe that anymore, but this guy was an awful nomination (and the bumpstock ban is just as bad).
