I don't think this will go well for the citizen who interceded. I don't believe there was a direct threat to his life and I believe in yelling at the perpetrator to drop the knife. If it were a gun, maybe a different story since that deadly force can be projected at distance and quickly. I see a knife 30 feet away and I am drawing and shouting. Pulls attention from the immediate victims, so they can escape (maybe) but let's perpetrator know the game just changed and knife wielding is trumped by gun pointed.
Still a very stupid and naive game to play in public, but prosecution will say, not stupid enough to die over.....
Hope I'm wrong....

Takes less than 3 seconds to cover 30 feet, how fast do you draw? That's barely draw and shoot time let alone time to shout.

While I agree with you, I have little confidence that any random prosecutor would.

That's probably correct if you are the target. However, if you are not the original target, you could already have drawn and be ready to raise your weapon if the assailant turns to engage you. You have the element of "surprise " by choosing to insert yourself into the situation.
