Cody Wilson Thwarts Another Attempt To Stop Ghost Guns
The ATF is expected to adopt a new rule requiring that the metal parts hobbyists used to manufacture their DIY weapons be registered as legal firearms. So Cody Wilson made those parts unnecessary.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is expected to adopt a new rule in the coming weeks with the potential to undermine the DIY gun industry: It will require that the metal parts that hobbyists used to manufacture their so-called ghost guns be registered as legal firearms.

Cody Wilson, the founder of the Austin-based Defense Distributed and a prominent figure in the DIY gun movement, has been planning a countermove that he says will allow his customers to circumvent the new rule: The company has modified its $500 home milling machine so that users no longer need to load it with the partially fabricated metal parts subject to the new rule.

Instead, they'll be able start from scratch with a solid block of aluminum.

He's calling these "0% receivers".

Registered? Did I miss the date for entering my guns in the national registration database?

ATF is trying to push rule changes that would require 80% receivers to be marked and recorded as firearms.

You are supposed to believe that all guns should be registered....not true, but if the can convince you to do so voluntarily...they are happy to perpetuate the myth....

Alas, it's not $500, it's $2500.
$500 is only a deposit:

The article states “registered”.

All firearms constructed by licensed manufacturers are registered, in that their serial number is provided to ATF and first retail sale is recorded on the 4473.

The ATF's proposed rule changes would require that of all 80% receivers.

Wilson's new trick works with unmachined aluminum.

I think you need to recheck the word registered.

I understand that the reporters didn't use the word correctly, but what ATF is trying to do is a real problem, even if it isn't technically a registry.

Does anyone know when unelected government agencies were given the authority to "redefine" what something is, so an update of actual law by the legislators who are accountable to the public is no longer necessary?
