Minnesota DFL to reintroduce gun control legislation in January
When the Minnesota Legislature convenes in January, House Democrats plan to reintroduce a Red Flag bill and a separate bill that would require criminal background checks for all firearm transfers and sales.

Rep. Dave Pinto, (DFL) St. Paul, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS his background check bill would require anyone purchasing a gun to have a criminal background check done by the local law enforcement agency where the sale is taking place, but it would also have exceptions for the transfer of guns between immediate family members.

“We have background checks on all gun sales and this would require them on all gun sales,” said Pinto. “Immediate family members, siblings, spouses, parents, grandparents, the background check would not apply. But, if you have a second cousin, you may not know about that person’s criminal record.”

I doubt that they remember that our existing Purchase Permit requirement already ensures a background check has been done...

They'll make this a requirement though for private sales and transfers, which isn't required under current law - that'll be their add-on.

We've talked w/ Pinto - he's being pretty cagey about what he's planning on actually putting into the bill.

Star Tribune will have a more in-depth story on Sunday.

624.7141 makes the legal liability for transferring a firearm without a background check significant, even for a private sale.

That has existed for quite some time. It is not new and it only applies to a situation where the seller knew the buyer was ineligible to own the arm.

Regardless, I think we all are aware that the next play coming up is to further the agenda towards the elimination of private firearm ownership in this state.

Correct - however this requires intent and knowledge that the buyer was ineligible. The bar for prosecution is high.

Pinto's bill will impose new requirements - we'll find out when he actually unveils the bill in early January.

Someone needs to ask these anti-gunners how exactly any of their proposals are going to stop juveniles and others of the criminal element from attaining firearms. Inquiring minds want to know!

^^^THIS^^^
I fail to see any means of enforcement/ prosecution of violation - of the requirement to do a background check prior to a private sale without knowing the ownership history of the gun.
AKA paper trail
aka registration.

Does anyone ever confront these clowns' hypocrisy during the discussions of reducing crime...They immediately cast the perpetrators as victims, and any reduction of crime will only be achieved with several generations of expensive gov't programs, with no intermediate metrics to measure success, or efficacy...
..yet disarming the law abiding populace will some how certainly achieve that...

For those whose strategy is to never let a crisis go to waste, the last thing they would wish to achieve is any lack of crisis.

I think you summed that up very nicely.

It'll "close the gun show loophole" that is responsible for enabling hundreds of thousands of incidents of gun crime and violence.

It's one step closer to creating a world in which simple possession of an unapproved firearm is a crime.
