Fourth Precinct Feb.3, 2014

Facts:
SinceJanuary 28, 2013 – January 31, 2013 there were seven unoccupied residential burglaries. Large amounts of copper were taken from these homes. In many cases, suspect(s) kickeda door open, smashed a window, or broke open the lock boxes where house keys were left for entry to the homes. Roughly the burglaries were from Girard to Russell, between Broadway and Lowry Avenues North. When copper pipes are cut, it can potentially become a dangerous situation for the neighborhood.
Fourth Precinct has increased patrols, and field contacts in this area.
What you can do:
• Keep your property well-lit. Make your home appear occupied at all times.
• Pay attention to any vacant property on your block.
• Take turns shoveling snow, so that the home looks occupied.
• Keep the contact information for the realtor or property manager, handy.
• If you will be away for an extended time, have a trusted friend or neighbor watch over your property. This includes moving your vehicle if it is left on the street, and picking up your mail.
• Also it is important to turn on lights in a vacant property, so it appears occupied.
• Know your neighbors so you are aware of normal activity on and around their property.
• Watch over your neighbors’ properties as well as your own. A copper burglary in an occupied dwelling can puts the whole neighborhood at risk.
• Organize or revitalize an existing block club or neighborhood watch group.
• Remember call 911 to report suspicious activity! This includes unusual noises, strangers walking down your alley and looking in garages, loitering, ‘casing’ unoccupied residences, vehicles with occupants you don’t recognize circling the block, or people going door to door asking for folks who do not live there!
• If you notice something suspicious about a vacant property, call 911 immediately! Then contact the property manager!
• The longer the timeframe a vacant residential break in, is unreported, the greater the risk to all!
• Please share this information with others on your block!

I want to keep this thread 'clean' but I couldn't help notice the WEAPONS RECOVERED stat at the end of the report:

WEAPONS RECOVERED: 4th Pct Year-to-Date: 122 City-Wide Year-to-Date: 167

122 4th precinct
167 City Wide

That's 75% of all 'weapons seized' are in the 4th Precinct.

Good piece of hard data.

I don't have a source for the quote that 'The 4th precinct has more 'crime' than all other precincts combined.

The good news is that new Mayor 'Betsy Wetsy' Hodges plan for 'Cradle to Pre-school Program' is gonna fix that for us.
