Welcome from Garage Logic.

One of my bosses when I was in the Navy was an avid sky diver. He tried to talk me into going, and I let him know in no uncertain terms that the only way I would ever jump out of a perfectly good airplane was if it was on fire and in danger of crashing. I may have worded it a little differently, though. Something about nobody in their right mind.....

Funny you mention that. In 2003, I was dozing in the back of a Cessna 206 when we heard a loud BANG at about 8k. Almost immediately after, it got real quiet and oil started spraying on the windscreen. We were over the town of Waseca and the four skydivers (including myself) decided it would be best to bail out, all around 4k. The pilot, who owned the plane, decided to dead-stick it in, and landed perfectly on the runway. It all happened pretty quickly, but we all made it out just fine. Nice to have that parachute, let me tell you!

Welcome to the forums!

Where, in the metro area, would you recommend someone go for their first jump? It's always been something I wanted to do.

A few places to go: Skydive Twin Cities (western Wi, exit 16 just off i94), and Westside Skydivers in Winsted. Sure, there are other places but these are the closest. I know that SDTC isn't open in the winter, but they typically have a big/fast airplane in the late spring. This'll usually get you 3-4k more feet for the same cost. More time to crap yourself. Each place has a website and they'll answer all your questions. I call SDTC my home dropzone.

If you really wanna go you NEED to make that appointment, otherwise something will always get in the way. Good luck!

Peace!

Looks like I also need to drop 30 pounds. Maybe I'll make that my incentive to lose some weight. Make 220 and treat myself to skydiving.
