Just so happens that I was looking to buy my first firearm around the time of the most recent tragedy, so it may look to some like I am one of the panic buyers, in reality I'm just a normal buyer.
About me, I'm a mechanical designer with a leading medical implant device company. My biggest hobby is cars. Buying, selling, fixing, building... I just love them. Currently I am building a scratch built open top birdcage frame roadster. If you want more info or pictures I'd be happy to post up.
My wife and I have both used several different styles of firearms, but neither of us have owned our own until now. I picked this up a few weeks ago now, and have only had it to the range once so far. I'd like to also pick up a handgun in the next few months. I've taken the conceal and carry permit class on two occasions over the last 10 years, both times I passed but didn't have my own firearm, procrastinated, and ended up not filing for the actual permit. Recently my wife suggested that we go through it again, together. So that's exciting, and this time I'll have my own before I do the class.
Here is the new AR-15

(photo I took, not stolen off the internet)
It's a Bushmaster .223-5.56
The only modifications are a quad rail, Magpul angled forward grip, a Mako Israeli Defense Forces Pistol Grip, Vortex red/green dot sight, and it came with a couple 30rd Pmags.
I also picked up a Ciener 22LR conversion bolt for it, and a couple 25rd magazines (along with the 10rd mag that came with the Ciener kit)
the 22LR really makes it economical to spend time at the range. I put 400 rounds of 22LR through the kit with zero failures, so I'm happy. Even though I had to spend some time cleaning it that evening.
My only qualm is that I'm not much of a fan of the carry handle, but I can't really complain all that much. The price was good, pre-inflation, and it functions well.
One question maybe one of you folks can address. I was told that the firearm is a .223-5.56, and ".223-5.56" is stamped on the side of the lower reciever, but a relative mentioned that it cannot fire the 5.56 rounds unless it has some other marking. I have read up on all of the differences between the rounds themselves and the chambers they're designed for, but is there a way to tell for sure without a bore scope or taking a cast? I have a feeling the relative may be misinformed, but I'd like to do my due diligence.
