New Shooter

Postby Medicius on Sun Aug 26, 2012 10:53 am

Howdy folks,

I'm new(er) to shooting in general. I purchased my first handgun (CZ P07) two weeks ago and have fired it twice now (~200 rounds of the 350 I first purchased). I joined a local outdoor range, near Zumbro Falls. I'm really enjoying using it and am currently researching different SA Shotgun and Carbine options. I'd like to give 3-Gun a try along with other competition shooting sports. I've never been hunting and last weekend I fired my first 12 Gauge pump (25 year old borrowed from my dad - along with his old mossberg 22). I'm also looking at picking up a 22 handgun to help me with trigger pull training.

I've also been searching for classes to get me more comfortable with firearm safety (not just handgun, but long and carbine also). My boys are getting near the age they can start hunting and they're both excited. Since my experience with firearms was limited I decided it was time to get some experience in preparation for the day they were able to hunt. So...here I am, actually enjoying the very thing I started out of fatherly duty.

Anyway, I'm excited to have found a MN Gun Forum. I look forward to picking your brains for information on firearms and firearm resources.

Welcome to the shooting sports....

There are a lot of guys here that are really knowledgeable and can move you along. There are steel shoots that you need to look out for that are in the west metro that are a blast so to speak, nice place to start to learn more and meet some really good folks.

Enjoy and be safe.

Welcome to the forum and the shooting sports!

As far as getting ready for hunting, going through hunters safety will get you the regs/rules and some basic safety info, I'd make sure that's on the to-do list. Taking a weekend of Appleseed training will get you proficient (and safe) with a long gun in practical, field positions and also open the door to service rifle and other competitions should you so desire. It's a great program for your kids & spouse as well who can attend at a discounted rate. Best $80 (with range fee and ticket processing costs) I've spent on anything in a long time for the best weekend of training I've gotten even after shooting for 10 years, I imagine it would be of tremendous benefit to someone newer to firearms with a desire to learn and few bad habits to work around. :)

Not only is the DNR firearm safety course a good idea, it's required for anyone born after 12/31/1979. You can find a list of firearm safety courses here.
