I'm taking my permit to carry class in a few days and will be looking to purchase my first handgun. I own rifles and shotguns and want to enter the world of the handgun. Any suggestions on a reliable, cost- efficient first piece, would be greatly appreciated.

Glock. Any flavor you'd like. Reliable, cost effective and addicting.

Can't go wrong with a Ruger P95 or any of the SR line.

You might want to look at S&W M&P also. I have one in 9mm and a Glock 19 in 9mm as well and both are excellent guns. I like the trigger reset better in the Glock 19.

And just to add to the fray the Springfield XD and XDM's are nice. I prefer them over Glock. If you can get somewhere where you can rent some to try that might help you decide.

Love my XD 9mm sub compact. Been carrying it and shooting it since 2005. Picking up an XDs 45 tomorrow. My dad is big into glocks and I was until I shot an XD. Love them.

My Glock 26 get carried most often. Very concealable but still easy to shoot well.

i tend to agree - 26 carries good too.
