Hello from the south metro

Postby mbell44 on Sun Sep 22, 2013 10:27 pm

Hello there. I'm a complete newb to the gun world and I'm thinking about making my first purchase. I'm leaning toward a 9mm subcompact. Any preferences? I'm considering Glock and S&W but open to other suggestions. Also, does anyone know of a good place to buy with better prices than Gander and Cabelas?

Hi and welcome from Edina. You might want to check Arnzen Arms in Eden Praire, or Gunstop in Minnetonka. Both have good inventory and decent pricing. You might like the Glock 26, which I used to own. I only sold it because I prefered the .45 ACP round and got a G30, which is an excellent carry gun. S&W Shields are also popular, but I am not that familiar with them.

I hope you enjoy you time on the forum. I'm sure you will get good advice from those far more experienced than I.

Welcome from another southern boy! ;)

I'd suggest going to the MWCA show at the Minnesota State Fair Education Building this weekend. Lots of stuff to see (and want  )!

If you can go to some matches, try that, too.

Good luck!

Make sure you have your ducks in a row with either your Permit to Carry or Permit to Purchase - it makes things much smoother and its the law.

Some advice before purchasing would be:
- get trained on the fundementals of safe handling etc.
- shoot a bit first.
- try out some different makes and models before you spend $400-$500 .

There are instructors on this board that would help you get familiar with firearms and there are members on here that may be willing to meet you at any of the indoor ranges to let you try some different brands and models to make sure you like what you may ultimately buy (hint - offer to pay the range fee and ammo and you'll be in like Flynn).

The investment in time and money on the head end will be well worth it in the long run. Good luck.

Mbell, why are you thinking subcompact? I had two friends choose subcompacts and booth regretted it - longer learning curve since they are harder to control.

Remember - this will not be your last gun so it does not have to do everything
Did you just buy that beautiful firearm, or are you trying to sell that piece of crap?
