Disposing of a suppressor

Disposing of a suppressor

Postby gun_fan111v2 on Wed Sep 30, 2015 7:31 pm

Well, I am on the roll with questions here... So I have another one.

What is one supposed to do after owning a suppressor via a Trust for 4-5 years if they are looking to get rid of it? I think a few places like Frontiersman stated that they will do suppressor transfers... What else could be done with it? Can it be disposed off easily by driving over with a truck?

Just curious :)

It can be transferred into my trust.

You can transfer it person to person within the same state on a form 4, no dealer needed. Post a WTS ad, see what kind of bites you get.

You would need to transfer on a Form 4 as stated above, along with another 200 bucks for another tax stamp. No dealer needed

You could destroy per ATF instructions: "A silencer may be destroyed by completely severing each component by means of a cutting torch that has a tip of sufficient size to displace at least one-quarter inch of material at each cut location. Concerning the outer tube(s) of a silencer, these components may be destroyed by crushing them flat in lieu of cutting with a torch."

(I would probably just use a chop saw with a thick blade and cut the whole thing lengthwise)

Send the ATF a registered letter informing them of the destruction of the suppressor along with a before and after picture clearly showing the model and serial number of the unit.

No suppressor yet, just interested in what the options are.

You could sell it to someone else. Why would you want to get rid of it?

If you are asking me. Curiosity got the best of me as I am considering buying one and want to know if I have to store it forever if I decide one day that it is useless.
