What is the normal 'duty cycle' for a 249? I assume not that many rounds in a row...

After a quick google it appears sustained fire is meant to be about 100 rounds a minute. It’s normally fed by 200 round drums and typical loadout would be 1000 rounds.

From Army Study Guide. (Non-gov) -What are the rates of fire for the M249?
Sustained rate is 100 rounds per minute
Rapid rate is 200 rounds per minute
Cyclic rate is 650 to 850 rounds per minute
So the max reccommended max rate of 200 is less than 1/3 the cyclic rate.
They must be making MG barrels out of better stuff these days. That one didn’t get really cherry red until over halfway through. Fifty years ago I saw an a malfing M-60 glow that hot on a songle 100 round belt burst. Granted others had been firing it so I don’t know how hot it already was.
