Don't forget to pick up a new cleaning rod and attachments. The regular stuff won't fit.

What's a cleaning rod?

I don't think anyone makes a semi-auto one anymore. I think Remington recalled of theirs.

There is talk that this round is inherently dangerous in semi formats. I would assume that it was because rounds were getting set off prematurely.

Check out the performance of the .22 mag before you jump into a .17. It will be loaded long after the .17s are no more. Don't get me wrong, I love new stuff as much as the next guy but when it comes to 17 cal in my opinion it only comes out of a BB gun.

With the reviews I have read, most of the "off the shelf" .22 mag rifles are hard pressed to maintain MOA, or anything close to it, while the .17 is more likely to hold MOA or better in many off the shelf rifles. Apparently the BC of the .17HMR allows it to be inherently more accurate than the .22 I'm aware that terminal velocity and overall energy performance is better with the .22 mag, but it would be more fun for me to make tiny little groups of tiny little holes than slightly larger groups of slightly larger holes. Besides, for hunting applications this round has plenty enough oomph to take down any <5lb critter in MN.

I invite people to elaborate on this either in favor of or against it. Ballistics data and what it means in practical application is a weak point for me, and I would love to learn a bit more......

I have the Savage 93R17 and I love it. Bought it at Cabelas a couple of years ago in a package deal with a little scope that was "calibrated" for the 17 HMR.

pro's: makes big holes in critters, no recoil to speak of so you'll see the critters blow up thru the scope, $12/box is not all that expensive, crows hate this round, crows vanish in a cloud of black feathers, accurate (1 MOA on days with no wind), accutrigger!, popular consensus is that 17 HMR will stay and HM2 may not, paid less than $300 for the whole package, excellent youth rifle

cons: makes big holes in critters so headshots are a must when you want something left to eat, $12/box is not all that cheap either, it is a lot louder than a .22 lr so not for suburban pest control, wind will blow it away, cheap magazines that a PITA get into the rifle right, not a viable coyote round IMO.

I have owned 3 of them. An NEF single shot, Ruger 77/22 target and Savage 93 heavy barrel. All of them would shoot sub MOA. On calm days the NEF and the Ruger would produce 1/2", 3 shot groups at 100 yards. It's a fun cartridge to plink and hunt small game with. I have had people say it will "blow up" a prairie dog if it's inside 100 yards, but it will not. A well place hit will usually kill them before they can get down the hole.

If you want it, get it. Can't get one when your dead. Have fun now.

Even during the bleakest days of the ammunition dearth, .17 HM2 was available is the stores. Have been thinking of either a heavy barreled Savage or CZ in this caliber. Right now, I'm leaning towards the CZ, but would rather buy an American product. Please don't tell me that Savages are made in Uruguay...

Speaking as a squirrel, when we see you fat dudes with those little girly 17HMR rifles, we fart in your general direction. :bolt:
