Pros and Cons of 17hmr

I had one and loved it at first, shot a 5/8 inch group at 100 yards but after having poor instant kill results on woodchucks and cats and the fact the it doesn't pay to shoot it if there's any breeze or wind I decided to stick with the .223. very fun until the novelty wears off.

Used to have a Marlin .17 but subsonic .22 Quik-shok seemed to do just as good on the woodchucks around my place. I took about 12 of them this year. 10 were with .22 Quik-shok and one was with the .22 Aguila 60 grain subsonic. (and one with 9mm Cor-bon DPX out of a Kahr PM9 ) They all dropped dead in their tracks with one shot except for the 60 grain bullet. That one was able to crawl about 6 inches. (and it was a headshot) For my purposes, the quieter .22 came out on top for where I live.

I did take the .17 out prairie doggin one year but was unimpressed. They had to be close and the wind just pushed the little bullets all over the place. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance but the rain set in and we only got about 4 hours of shooting on that trip. Sold it to a friend that vaporizes gophers with it from his tractor while he is baling hay. He's happy as hell.

Even during the bleakest days of the ammunition dearth, .17 HM2 was available is the stores. Have been thinking of either a heavy barreled Savage or CZ in this caliber. Right now, I'm leaning towards the CZ, but would rather buy an American product. Please don't tell me that Savages are made in Uruguay...

The "new" Browning T-Bolt is also available in 17HMR. I've sold a couple and they're very nice.

I think you're mistaking value with price again. The Strad Surcharge.
