.308's seem scarce ...

Postby GregM on Sun Jul 29, 2007 1:02 pm

I've been nosing around in stores and on the internet for a bolt action rifle in .308 Winchester. I see plenty of .30-06's, .270's, and a variety of 300's --- but very few .308's.

Is it just my imagination?

308's have been in short supply since before the war. I remember going into Cabala's to look at a then new Remington 700 lightweight and asking if they had one in 308. Not only didn't they have it in 308 they didn't have any bolt guns in 308.

It seems that all the new short action bolt guns now are in the new superdupershortmagnum calibers.
I will never apologize for being an American.

Check out these guys for some .308, they are about the only ones with any available that I am aware of....
..Not to be a snob, but I do not buy bulk or factory and only reload .308's, but many don't and just want range ammo. I know nothing about this ammo..........

rifles are around, but there was a big push to the latest and greatest a few years ago, which hopefully has died out, but .308's are the 2nd or 3rd most ordered chambering at Remington.

Surplus ammo is non existant, too many wars going on right now,m and all the SA, Aus, Indian and other countries are making more selling production to places like Darfur, Bosnia and Afghanistan.

Sheesh. Talk about confusing. Some people were talking about .308 rifles and some about .308 ammo. :D

As far as .308 ammo is concerned, it seems really, really hard to find surplus stuff. And the non-surplus stuff has jumped in price. The up side to it all is that my wife is hinting that I just ought to start reloading..... little just she know. :)

Imagination me thinks. Go to gunbroker.com and punch in:

remington 308 700

and you get 40 or so hits to various different Remington 700's in .308.

About a year ago I was drooling over a 700 in 308. I happen to stop by gander in woodbury. And wouldn’t you know it. They had the exact rifle I wanted. What else could I do but buy the thing… My hands where tied…

Absolutely. When the forces of the universe cause that sort of convergence, one must act quickly and decisively. As the Romans put it: Carpe diem.

Which means "Buy the gun immediately before some smart person snatches it up and you are left empty handed and filled with shame." Or something to that effect.
