Crossman 760

I bought a Crossman 760 for my son at Christmas. We waited to give it to him until this past weekend. When we went to use it - 10 pumps and the pellet rolls out the barrel. Ok so I pump it up again and and then it works. I tried all numbers with no real pattern of success. Long story short there was no consistency in the number of pumps and the velocity of the pellets coming out. 80% rolled out the barrel. Did I just get a crap gun or are they all crap right now. Recommendations of a pellet gun for an 8yo.

I have over ten thousand rounds through my Daisy Powerline 860, over thirty years of service and still shoots great. Pretty consistent with the number of pumps to velocity. Sometimes if pressure seems to need a boost, I spray WD-40 on the plunger.

My Daisy 880 is at least that old and has been shot so much the rifling is gone (thousands of steel BB's will tend to do that over 3+ decades!), but it still fires with good velocity... although not very accurately anymore. A few drops of oil on the plunger every couple years is all the maintenance I've done to it. The older guns like mine had metal receivers, barrel casings and pump handles (Daisy, Crossman, etc), now I see that the new guns are mostly plastic - but that shouldn't matter in regards to problem you're having. Sounds like you have a problem/leak with the pressure assy.

Crosman makes the best stuff in their price categories. Sounds like you have a lemon. Personally I'd exchange it if the store will still allow it. I would also be tempted to trade up to the Crosman 2100 for $10 (very approx) more if possible. Otherwise Crosman has a wickedly fast parts department that suggests their warranty dept might also be good.


Diagnosis:

Do the pumps get progressively more difficult?
Can you hear air weezing out of the valve?
Try cocking before pumping.
Can you hear the hammer slamming home?
Have you tried recocking and triggering when you get very little velocity?

These all boil down to either air isn't getting into or out of the valve. Or the valve is leaking.

Like any new gun, I would detail strip it and clean out the crud left over from manufacturing. I bought a crosman 1377 last year, that once I got the inner valve apart, showed grindings and black gunk slightly plugging the tiny holes here and there. It'll take some fiddling, but you could get it operating better than new if you break her down. If you find some seal nicked, crosman's parts depatment is actually cheaper for parts than some of the aftermarket places reselling them.
