I have always enjoyed my 30M1 carbine as being a fun little gun.
So far I am happy with my DTech AR15 chambered in 6X45, I am now looking at having one chambered for the 6.5 grendel <SP

A wasr-10 is a cheap way to get your foot in the door with an AK47 variant. Lots of fun and would be a decent hunting gun. They do make 5 round mags for them if it's an issue. You're not paying for fit and finish here and the accuracy will never hold a candle to a decent AR, but it's easy to love for what it is.

I kicked around the same thing, sustitute AK47 for 7.62, and wound up with a Saiga .308.

+1 ... I would say the M1 Abrams is vastly superior in most tasks.
