Mosin Nagant vs. Something more modern

On my Mosin the safety is a bugger to operate. You almost have to stand on the thing to work it. I have no idea how you would discreetly snick it off when there is a deer standing 25 yards in front of you.

It does, in fact, have a safety, but it's quite hard to engage. But this is not a complaint one would ever voice in the Red Army. Your officer would reply, "Safety? Safety? Is gun! Meant to kill! No warrior should know he has safety on gun, because he should be killing enemies of homeland! Safety make loud click to aid enemy in locating warriors! No safety!" while pounding his fist on the table.

On the plus side the flame that the M44 emitted, charbroiled the one you killed. The M44 is kicks like a mule, is louder than straight pipes on a 68 Nova, can be used as a club and is a great flame thrower. Better that the Johnny Seven I had as a kid. A true multipurpose rifle. Did I mention damn fun to shoot. Take one to the Oakdale range at dusk....it's like man-made lightning. Gawd I miss summer time.

Get the 44 or the 38, both of which are the short version. SOME of the surplus ammo is very flashy, some not. All the surplus ammo is corrosive but a swab down with a little sudsy ammonia on a patch will clean that up. The flashy ammo is no problem with commercial ammo that you'd hunt with, which is also non-corrosive.

They're basic, dependable rifles that served very well for about 100 years. I've got at least 7 or 8 of them in various configurations.

How much meat was missing? Would a smaller deer get knocked head over heels?

Meat damage can be no worse than a '06.

It is a .30 cal projectile and you are either shooting 150 at about 2800, 180 at about 2600, or 200 at about 2300 (why?).

'06 is going to be likely a 150 at 2900, 165 at about 2800, or 180 at 2700

so it is not the big boy in the MN deer woods by any means.
