Ummm, guys, you do know Bill Ruger is dead and the family no longer runs the company, right?

H&H,

I paid around $775 through Discount Gun Dealer. The rifle comes with Butt Stock spacers, ONE 10 round magazine, bases and rings for mounting a scope, and a lock.

The rifle is both light enough to carry as one might for deer hunting, and heavy enough to mitigate recoil for a smaller shooter. (like myself)

I have a Ruger frontier in 300WSM with a extended eye relief scope, which is actually very similar to the Ruger Scout Rifle. That setup is extremely nice for deer hunting, light enough to carry all day, fast pointing and accurate. It only has the internal 4 round magazine, which could be cumbersome to load during a session on a Prairie Dog town. I may consider selling that one now that they came out with the Scout Rifle. If you are interested shoot me a PM when the time comes.

I put my post in past tense (at least toward the end). ;)

I'm waiting for the Kel-Tec copy to be released. :)

I have decided to mount a scout style scope on my Gunsite rifle. Question for you guys regarding brand preference. I have bought Leupold scopes in the past and been very happy. The leading contenders for the scout scope I will buy for this rifle are the Leupold and Burris. I am not familiar with Burris products, sure I have heard of Burris, I've just never owned any of thier products. I would appreciate any feedback you might give; Leupold vs Burris vs another manufacturer.

I own both Burris and Leupold products and they are both great. I put the Leupold on my Savage Scout simply because it had similar magnification but a bigger objective lens.

I have a Burris handgun scope on a .45-70 BFR so it gets knocked around pretty good. Have put a few boxes through the pipe of some fairly staunch stuff and it holds zero. Decent glass. Price point was a slight bit more than the comperable leo I think. Looked through both and thought the Burris was a bit sharper but then again I wear glasses so my vision is skewed already!

Except for the qualification of having a 'scout scope' mounting place, Kel-tec already has a Scout-style rifle: http://www.keltecweapons.com/our-guns/rifles/su-16b/ (it actually may satisfy more 'scout' requirements than the Ruger, though Cooper hated 223)

Glad to hear the Ruger wrung out well with the iron sights. Disappointed to hear that the fit and finish were only average - for that price tag you should get a nice piece. Might have to look into one o these...

Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle

Postby gogopher on Thu Feb 24, 2011 10:28 am

I orderd a Burris Scout scope and some Warne mounts. Should have a range report in the second week of March. I agree that .223 wasn't going to meet my needs. I have been waiting for a rifle like this with a detachable magazine. Since I reload I did'nt really want a semi auto pitching my brass into the weeds. I am happy so far with this solution. I can't wait for an opportunity to go Prairie Dogging and Hog hunting. The scout style scope may not provide enough magnification for longer shots on prairie dogs, we'll see.

I am anxious to shoot that puppy with the scout scope on it.

How long can the ammo be and still fit in the magazines?

Goalie,

I don't think the magazines are much longer than standard .308 loaded round length. I can check and get back to you.

Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle Magazine length

Postby gogopher on Thu Feb 24, 2011 6:51 pm

Goalie,

2.881" is the official measurement. According to the reloading books here in the bunker, that should accomodate any bullet weight commonly found in nature.....now, if you plan to defile Mother Nature, lets talk....

Nice, that means I can use my pet load in that baby and see how she shoots.

Picked up one of these a few yrs back with the idea of a poor man's scout rifle. Another baaad idea. There aren't many guns that I'm glad to be shed of, but the JC is sure in the top five.

What about a Spanish Mauser in .308? I'll hazard a guess that the weight might be problematic, but it's short and it seems like there shouldn't be any durability issues...
