I have to ask this-

What is the better caliber for a SHTF handgun - 9mm or 45 acp? 8-)

The one you can get your hands on and actually use.

There are phases of survivalism. Mine were: best SHTF gun. Best SHTF battery (10/22, 12ga pump, bolt .308, AR/AK & handgun). Food supply for 2 weeks. Food supply for 3 months (stalled here, in a totally indefensible frame house in the suburbs). Food supply for 2 years and farming supplies and country retreat with livestock and a 20 person retreat group and fortifications and electronic motion detectors. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_51?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=patriots+a+novel+of+survival+in+the+coming+collapse&sprefix=patriots+a+novel+of+survival+in+the+coming+collapse

Get the M1A or whatever, learn to shoot it well and have a blast.

And put together a get home bag for your car to get home from work or a trip. http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=ie7&q=get+home+bag&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&rlz=1I7TSNA_enUS390US390

Now, to inject a bit of logic into this fine conversation. :D

The best rifle is the one you have + the best rifle is the one you shoot well = the best rifle is one you like.

Also, somewhere in the survivalist concept is redundancy. So, in the spirit of redundancy and the rifle I like, I present the next picture. This kit is to be used in case the first zombie-fighting kit proves to be not enough.

Well in that case.. This is all you need. Twin tasty treats of 22mag varmint in a stylish package as a SHTF weapon. Otherwise, I agree with familierizing yourself with a stupidly simple, yet dependable weapon systems, or quite a few.. and don't short yourself, learn as much about every weapon you can, just in case you have to pick one up on the run. :bolt:

A Nice bolt action in any reasonable hunting caliber that you can handle and yet is readily available. 243, 208, 20-06, 270, even 30-30 would all be good choices.

Myself I would prefer a pistol caliber carbine as an option - say in 44 mag... With a lever...... and a red dot.... beat that when the SHTF and you actually need to shoot something.

Google "SHTF Rifle". I count 117,000 results that you could click on. The point is, other wiser people than you and me have belabored this to no conclusive end. There is always room for argument, because there is no best firearm for anything

This subject, as thin as it is, has been beaten worse than a rented mule. The premise is exceedingly thin, the differences in the rifles are thin (as in how effective one would be compared to the other in.....my god I'm tired of the acronym SHTF... a SHTF scenario.)

If all the crap you mention is happening, then who Effen cares if you have an AR15 or an M1A. Really, what difference can there be? Are you walking 50 miles a day with it and 500 rounds on your back? If so then you are trying harder than me to survive, and more power to ya. Otherwise, both will make something that is alive, dead. End of story.

You can't really bitch about the answers you get, when you ask for the best Doomsday rifle, while admitting you have made almost zero preparations for such a situation. The gun is a drop in the bucket compared to what it'll take to keep a family alive.

If all you're asking is which rifle is the coolest and will make your wang look the biggest, nobody can answer that but you.

right on.
no one in MN is going to walk 50 miles humping his gun let alone survival gear and anyone "bugging out" for the woods is in for a rude awakening half of the year.

I wouldn't say "no one."

50 miles isn't all that far to walk. Justa say'n
