CZ-527 or Romanian PSL ?

Postby mc762x54R on Fri Mar 25, 2011 8:39 pm

I would like to get a scoped rifle in a cheap to shoot caliber.

I have kind of narrowed down my choices to a CZ 527 in 7.62x39 or a Romanian PSL in 7.62x54r

Occasionally I get the chance to shoot steel at 300+ yards, and .223 & 30.06 get kind of expensive to shoot (the other 2 scoped rifles I have)

Can a 7.62x39 reach out to 300, 400, 500 yards? I know a 7.62x54r can, but I have no idea what kind accuracy to expect out of a PSL.

If anybody has either of these rifles please give me your opinion, if anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.
Thanks.

I've got a 527 in 223. Love that rifle. Only real downside is if you want to mount a scope low, you have to either extend the bolt handle, or grind it out to relieve it big time.

Targeting with 7.62x39 past 400 yards is tough (500 pretty tough), but not impossible. The 7.62x54r is the better round for ranges past 400 in my opinion.

I liked shooting the PSL, and recommend it, though I heard there's been some issues with certain builds.

I've never hear anything miraculous about the 39 round for long range accuracy. I've shot both, but neither at any long distance. I guess I'd do the 54r if it's just for long range, but cost wise it's kinda hard to lose.

Which gun is cheaper?

I think they are pretty close in price, once you add a decent scope to the 527
7.62x54 is fun to shoot, and a little cheaper most of the time than 7.62x39.

I guess I'm worried about the accuracy out of a PSL, and also how solid the scope mount it, and is there a way to put a different scope on them?

Looks in the pictures like it has a similar sized side rail as an AK. Hopefully any shop that has a PSL in stock would have an AK mount for you to try on. Those aftermarket mounts are adjustable so it shouldn't be an issue, and then you've got regular scope options.

They have everything you would want. Can buy any one of an assortment of scopes that fit the existing rail or you can buy a mount that fits and scope rings for any commercial scope you desire.

I've got a 527 varmint in .204 Ruger. It's OK, but I liked it a lot better when I bought it. The safety is backwards, and I decided that I didn't like the detachable mag sticking out the bottom (RVB precision would fix this last time I checked, but it would cost mag capacity.) I've since decided that I prefer blind box or floor plates in a hunting rifle (in that order)The single set trigger is a nice trigger when you set it, but I've come to decide that I prefer to have a gunsmith work over a regular trigger (simpler is better; all else being equal).

I did handle a carbine in 7.62X39, and it was light and handled well. If you could find low rings, for it, I think that you could get the scope fairly low by with a weaver steel tube scope (they have small ocular bells)

Find a copy of Guns&Ammo's 'Complete Book of the AK'. It's got a review of a gun similar to the PSL and makes a lot of comparisons to gauge off of. Otherwise, if you can find last year's edition they have a review of the PSL itself.

I haven't handled a 527 in a few years, is the safety still backwards on current production? The reverse safety issue is what has prevented me from owning one.

If the OP's name is any indication, go with the PSL.

You may want to look into a Finnish M28/76 in 7.62x54R. Surplus models hit the country recently and can be had for as little as 700 bucks.

I just can't help but think this was somebody's winter mosin project. That bolt looks oddly familiar.
