Nikon BDC vs MilDot

For those of you familiar with both, which do you prefer and why? Let's assume for big game 200-500 yds.

I have both types available and I have to say I like Nikon BDC for hunting at least.

I have this on Nikon Laser IRT scope and knowing the range and simply using the circle to compensate has worked well for me against various backgrounds. If I am shooting a paper target, it isn't a big issue, but having hollow circles lets me know in varying light conditions.

Not a huge difference, but that's what I know.

To use a MilDot, unless you are versed in it's proper use and application, intimately familiar with the platform, glass, munitions, etc...and practice.....
then the BDC is a fast, easy means to estimate a shot where you can afford to miss..............

C'mon, you can buy a mil-dot master and not even have to do math anymore.



That said, do you know how to use a mil-dot scope? Have you used a mil-dot scope?

If the answers are no, then, as hammAR stated, their are "easier" methods. They also happen to be less-precise methods. That said, a BDC reticle, a known load, a laser rangefinder, and practice can do wonders.

Heck, practice can do wonders.....

The Nikon BDC has worked extremely well for me personally. The Mildot system is also a platform I have used and did well with. The support Nikon offers and their website and compensator program are very good. I do recommend it with my own successes as my reasoning. Best of luck my friend.

wow. quad tap. suppressive fire vs. aimed fire?

BDC seems like a nightmare to me. Seems like it limits you to using 1 ammo type (or as many as you can remember the different POA's/POI's for. For me that'd be one specific load. My memory stinks.)

This coming from a rookie, who likes to reload and use different loads for different types of targets.

ETA: I also don't quite understand how one BDC reticle can account for 10-20 different calibers that it might be mounted on.

So my vote is, "too ignorant for Mildots, will stick to normal crosshairs in the meantime."
