If your considering an AR platform I would be happy to help you locate a great entry level rifle. I in fact have one in my possession which is unfired with many extras on it to include an Aimpoint scope and folding iron sites with a light package as well. If you are interested or just want to discuss AR's give me a shout. I am a DPMS fan and user.

Thank you. You will be hearing from me. Do you have a store front or is it just over the internet?

This is very true, but being new at this I don't want to take off a bigger bite then I can chew. I look at these web sites and I'm not even sure what I am looking at.

I assembled my first AR from a kit without ever having seen one even broken down into upper and lower halves. It's lego difficulty here.

that said, my biggest regret was not sampling lots of different ARs in different configurations, and therefore ending up with a 10 lb rifle with a carry handle (which I still have, and probably would have gotten eventually, but I'd have been better off with something different for a "first" AR).

Try lots of guns, in lots of different configurations.

Then buy or build what you like best/what best meets your needs.

Watching the videos at the Brownells site might help gain a better understanding of the different components even if you dont build it yourself.

I have never seen one of there builds or talked to anyone who has one but I did find out recently there is a company in Stillwater which does ARs http://www.kiesfirearms.com/Home_Page.html

Thank you everyone for all your help. I just spent some time looking at the Midway catalog. It's amazing how much things start to make sense just looking at a catalog. I already have a list started of things I need to find answers to. Keep the posts coming. I know there is at least one other person in the postion I am in reading this thread.

I sent you a PM, let me know if you want to swing by and check out mine, I'd be happy to share my mostly useless knowledge.

PM sent back at you. Your useless knowledge is better than not having any like me.

If you want to shot on a day off, drop a PM and we can get together. I have a couple you can play with. If you come to Steel Shoots in Hutch, we could blast a few between the banging and pinging.

That would be great. Biggest thing for me and the steel shoots is I need to ride with someone. We are a single car family, we had to sell my truck to pay for some of my daughter's medical stuff when things were really bad. I am willing to pay someone gas money and a little extra to pick me up at my house. I would love to try out the steel shoots it sounds like a lot of fun and trying out an AR would just put icing on the cake.
