Got a little adventurous today (painting)

Postby dsm2nr on Thu Apr 28, 2011 8:40 pm

I've seen a few threads about rifle painting with cheap spray paint and decided to give it a try (knowing that I could paint thinner it back to the parkerized look.)

I have only touched spray paint a couple times for model rockets in science class way back 5th grade. So my odds of it coming out decent were against me.

However I sucked it up and started spraying. I did a base coat of khaki and olive green. Then did stencils of khaki over earth brown over olive green. I though it turned out pretty good, don't have any close ups right now but here's a few I took checking out how well the camo worked.

The day was fun but I could've done a better job prepping and a better job using thinner layers. Trying to put back on my rail covers and fore grip weren't fun.

I had a buddy in college find a nice Benelli shotgun all camo'ed up and leaning against a tree while he was grouse hunting. Some poor bugger set it down to take a dump or something and couldn't find it again!

Nice looking paint job though!

Anyone ever read Harvard Lampoon's "Bored of the Rings"?

As the fellowship was leaving Lornadoon, Lady Lavalier gave them gifts:

"It is the sad hour of parting," said Lavalier solemnly. "But I have for each of you a small gift to remind you of your stay in Lornadoon in the dark days to come." So saying, she produced a large chest and drew out a handful of wondrous things.

"For Arrowroot," she said, "crown jewels," and handed the surprised king a diamond-shaped pear and a plover's egg the size of an emerald.

"For Frito, a little magic," and the boggie found in his hand a marvelous crystal globe filled with floating snowflakes.

She then gave each of the other members of the company something rich and strange: to Gimlet, a subscription to Elf Life, to Legolam, a Mah-Jongg set, to Moxie, a case of Cloverine Brand Salve, to Pepsi, a pair of salad forks, to Bromosel a Schwinn bicycle, and to Spam a can of insect repellent.

The gifts were quickly stowed away in the little boats along with certain other impedimenta needful for a quest, including ropes; tins of Dinty Moore beef stew; a lot of copra; magic cloaks that blended in with any background, either green grass, green trees, green rocks, or green sky; a copy of Jane's Dragons and Basilisks of the World; a box of dog yummies; and a case of Poland water.

Which is neither here nor there, except that whenever I hear someone talk about camo patterns, I think about those magic cloaks, "that blended in with any background, either green grass, green trees, green rocks, or green sky".

My brother found a rem 700 leaning up against a tree on our property several years ago, when the full camo hunting rifle craze was one. He still has it.

I could quote that ad infinitum.

Yeah I was in Monticello Saturday. I'm guessing you're the one with the M&P MOE?

Man would that suck a big one to lose a rifle by leaning it against a tree and forgetting where.

Oh I thought it was an m&p. I was running on three hours of sleep so I didn't retain much of the classroom info.

It's kinda hard to tell from the pics you posted but the paint job looked great. I was pretty surprised when you told us you rattle canned it....

Seems to be a lot of people that found camo guns in the field. My buddy found one too, in a camo case laying on the ground. He had to step on it before realizing that something was there other than ground.
