If all goes well I will be using 45-70 for deer next season.

By that definition, my M&P is belt Fed. While the traditional Belt Fed might explain Slurpee's shooting, it sure doesn't explain mine

All my life out in Idaho Mule deer area the gun that has piled up more deer/bear/elk/ than any other and a lot of them combined is the good old 30-30. Now that the old timers are dieing off a lot of the guys are using the 270 and the 308. Myself I use my 284 Husqvarna . For all a round has great distance holds a good group and has the knock down power I need. Never shot a .45-70 what would it be compared to????? I posted pic yesterday of it but will post 1 more of the stock and the great cheek rest they carved into it.

Nothing wrong with a .45-70 for close range, heavy cover deer. It makes a big hole going in and a big hole going out. In a lever gun it's a quick handling, quick shooting rifle. In heavy cover you don't want to track very far, and you want the trail to be well marked. The perfect brush gun. Stay within its limitations (~150 yds), and there is little downside.

I carry a short barreled .45-70 marlin guide gun in NW Ontario. Love it. It does kick a bit

My wife has been using a Marlin .45-70 with a illuminated reticle scope for years.

No issues. Drops them even if the shot is a little "off".

Go for it.

thanks for all the great advice! I think ill look into either the .45-70 or 30-30, as it seems I cant go wrong with either.

I have been using the 45/70 marlin with a scout scope for years. They are better now that we have LEVERevolution ammunition as this truly extends the useful range and tightens up the groups. The best thing about a 45/70 is they just don't go anywhere after taking the round. I really don't like chasing deer, and this has stopped the chase.

Load my 45-70 govt with 350 gr Hornady RN, and 41-42 gr of H4198. I was hitting orange topped clay pidgeons, tops toward me, at 100 yards with iron sights. God I love that Marlin 1895........................................
