New AR time for optics!

Postby promod1385 on Tue Jul 19, 2011 6:27 pm

Well i am new to the AR game and need come up with some optics for my new rifle!

Intended use: P-dog hunting
Varmint hunting
3gun
Hunting:
I have a Leuopold 3-9x40 that I plan on using for an up coming hunt in SD. I figure it will be more than enough scope for this rifle at the ranges I plan to shoot it at in. I do however need to get a mount for my scope. I am looking at the Burris P.E.P.R ($70 on Amazon is the cheapest I am finding). Any pro's or cons to this set up for sitting at a table and shooting dogs?

Has anyone tried this mount with the QR's? For my application I think it might be worth the $20.

3gun:
I am looking for a sub $300 1-4x24 scope. Any ideas? I am all ears!

My buddy has a Doctor mounted on some sort of a side/angle mount on his AR. I can see the occasional value for close up shots on coyote (we often have a shotgunner in the blind with some 00buck to handle getting jumped by a Yote). Anyone have input on this type of set up? I like the look of the JP and I like the fact its sights not some sort of electric/optic.

On the topic of alternative sighting systems, for coyotes you may be just as well off keeping a sidearm handy rather than trying to set your rifle for both scoped & close up stuff. If it's close enough for 00 buck it's close enough for a pistol shot most likely. :)

You could look at one of the red-dot optics systems that includes a magnifier, though again you're going to have to deal with flipping it out of the way. I know some 3-gun guys like the budget Millet 1-4x24 "DMS-1" (Designated Marksman Scope) for $250ish:

For your 1-4 scope, given your price range, look at the Weaver 1-3 and the Burris 1-4 TAC30. The Weaver glass is nice and the price is great. The Burris gives you more power and a more useful reticle.

Leatherwood Hi-Lux CMR 1-4x is right around $300 and is very nice.

For $120 you can also get a 1-4x from PrimaryArms.com that is very decent for that amount of money.

That's my hunting AR with a Leupold Mark AR 3-9x40. I like it a lot. It of course it being held by a P.E.P.R. I've only had it a month... So no chance to try it out hunting.

Don't break the bank, just get a Burris Tac30. You will be forever happy you did. If you shoot M855 green tips, this scope is right on, which is great because to many scopes are set up for 55 gr. ballistics.

Edit:
Overpowering with a scope IMO is generally not good. I have scopes up to 14 power, and I will have to say that from my personal perspective, I hate to go above a 2-7 power for anything, and generally like the 1-4 and 1.5 - 5 scopes. 2 of my 7 scopes go above 7 power (3-9 and 4.5-14), and neither one is mounted right now. It is just my opinion of what works for me, which will not necessarily work for everyone, but low power scopes rule for anything that moves. High power is nice for long range silhouette shooting. I am sure others have different ideas, but my eyes and body can compensate for lower powers better than high.

Check out larue mounts.

Cost more than PEPR, by about 30 bucks, but very repeatable zero, if you have 2 scopes to switch between for p-dogs and 3-gun.
