Tikka T3 in .270

my buddy bought one and on his first day ever rifle hunting deer and his 2nd shot with the gun ever nailed a deer perfectly in the vittles and it was only bore sighted.

id say its a decent gun.

ETA: this was in a stand at close range under 50 yrds so a easy shot to make with a scoped gun, even bore sighted. it was also a deer we did not expect to come up on us, we were planning on just sitting to see what was moving that day and see if he wanted to keep trying after he fell outta my tree stand the other day.

My first "deer rifle" was a .308. About fifteen years ago, I decided to get an '06, simply because most of the guys in our deer camp used 'em (my dad and my brother were about the only holdouts). Four years ago, I got an itch to pick up a 7mm-08. I found a nice deal on a Remington 7600 chambered for it, and jumped on it. Haven't second guessed my decision. I haven't sold the '06 (yet), but that's only because I'm holding out hope that my co-workers and I will eventually be selected for the moose lottery. Once that happens - or if the DNR eliminates moose hunting - the '06 will be sold.

I'd say that was either a helluva job bore-sighting, or a damn lucky miss!

This would be another good choice!

... and a few numbers to help support it ...

Not a bad round. Take into consideration the acquisition of the ammo. Some rounds are harder to find. I ran into that with a hand gun I got. The rounds are expensive, and Im fine with that. But they are hard to find. Maybe not a big deal, it just irritated me. I have a 30-06 you can try if you want. We can meet at a range around here.

Ya, 6.5 Creed's definitely new! I was kinda surprised to find a sporter rifle in it, as quick as I did. Midway looks to have the 129gr SST's in-stock fer $29/20rd ... 'bout the same as most any other box of Hornady. Core-Lokt's look to be several bucks cheaper. I spend 10x the difference in gas!

I 'spose if ya refuse to order cartridges online, it could take a while to find somethin'. .380 was purdy hard to come by, fer a while, there! Image

For a hunting round. I'd pick a common inexpensive round. Then when its hunting time.. You dont have to worry about getting what you need when you need it.

There are a lot of choices for a deer gunm - while there are no real arguments to be made against the 06, there are a lot of arguments that can be made for most other calibers. I am of the opinion that the 06 is overkill for deer as is the 270 for that matter.

Either would make a fine addition to the collection - either in a Ruger or a CZ, I like them both frankly. As with any other rifle - it is how you practice with it. I like the fact that ammunition is available nearly anywhere for either the 270 and the 06. Some of the other calibers out there are a little hard to come by when you are out in the yonder.

Frankly, either of the 2 would make great choices, they are substantially similar in design (Ruger and CZ) both are modified Mauser Actions, both guns sport a quality tube, both are quite capable in either choice of calibers as well.

It is all personal preference as to the caliber... As for the guns - I would say that they are both on equal footing.

thanks guys, i think i've made up my mind. i do believe that i'm going to go with the Ruger. however, i found one in .308 that i like, and the price is right. i'm probably going to buy it tonight, and if i do, i'll give you guys some pics and a possible range report after sending some lead through the bore

ok, i lied. i picked up a used Ruger M77 in 270WIN at Frontiersman. it's an older model with the tang safety. it also has a fixed 3x scope on it, that will probably get removed in favor of a 3-9 variable.
TOTALLY STOKED! i'll be trying to shoot it soon. very soon

Leave the 3x on it for not and spend the money on ammo instead. A 3x scope that holds zero is damn near perfect for deer hunting in Mn.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

^^^^ This.

I have a 3-9 on my 7600, and rarely move the magnification above 4x. My favorite scope of all time is still the 2-7 Redfield that's on my 742. Thinking of moving it over to one of my Winchesters (model 88 and model 100).

Hate to say it, but if you're on a budget, unemployed, 3 kids and a wife. mosin nagant, iron sights

personally, I would be out with a sharp stick and a rock if I was unemployed with 3 kids and wife. Squirrel, raccoon, deer, whatever happened to cross my path.
But we're not picky in my household. If it looks like it might be food, we eat it.
