Gimmie a Brake..... the Journey of Bubba Part Deux

Postby Stradawhovious on Sat Dec 03, 2011 3:40 am

Well, it was a long night. Between learning about lathes and mills, and having some cracked out maniac try to car jack Shipyard and I in south mpls at 2:30 in the morning (true story), it has been an interesting evening.

The good news is that thanks to the kindness of FJ540, and the use of his shop and expertise, Bubba is now near completion. We (well, to be fair, mostly FJ540) were able to fashion a brake for him tonight, and here is a brief pictorial of the events.........

Boy did I learn a bunch about metal and the tools used to manipulate it...... I had fun to boot! hopefully I can apply the final layer of turd polish on this bad boy tomorrow........ More pics to come and things progress.

That's an end mill, not a reamer in your 6th picture. Simply an alternate for a drill bit to give a square shoulder at the bottom of the hole.

It was a good time for sure.

I'm really curious about the encounter when you got home.

... impressed beyond words...

Also, "try" to carjack you, eh? I bet this is a story worth hearing, glad you are both (presumably) alright.

Thanks folks, it was fun. I hope to send some rounds downrange today, if not today then definitely tomorrow.

As for the "car jacking", it was largely uneventful. Some crazy maniac jumped in front of the car screaming at us (and a couple other cars) trying to get is to stop carrying something in his hand (appeared to be a bottle). I learned that red lights don't mean a whole lot in that situation, and that it is possible to drive with a steering wheel in one hand, and a gun in the other. I called 911 and gave a description. That was it.

and also making custom mandrels so you can chuck up a mosin barrel in a lathe. i think that took up the first hour just to get the damn thing "centered" - as much as you can center a mosin barrel. it's pretty friggin fun to get one on a lathe and check how "true" it is by watching the warble when you spin it

holy crap, were old school russian guns made for crap. it's crazy to think that FJ has better and more precision technology in his shop at home than even the most premier manufacturing house in the WORLD 70 years ago

Fancy looking break. To bad it's going on that steaming pile of Iron Curtain steel you seem to call a firearm :D

Any reason you didn't at least try and bring the OD down to the size of the barrel, make it longer (more like a Vias)?

You make it outts CS or SS? A big shiny turd really takes away from the beauty of that weapon (I think i threw up a bit in my mouth saying that)

Yeah, its all ni the name of science. (yeah, that's the ticket!)

Nope. Other than the fact that I don't know anything about brake design, and I really wanted to have a big blocky shiny turd hanging off the end of the barrel for visual effects. This isn't rocket surgery, its the fine art of "Bubba'ing".

Just plaind old commercial steel ( I think. FJ will have to chime in. It was out of his scrap bin). It will be blued as to not be so conspicuous.

And take away from the "beuaty" of the weapon? I think it looks effin' AWESOME. So there. :P

Ok, it will look slightly less like a turd once the cold blue kicks in.

Cool project. Kinda makes you understand all the hacked up M98's you see at shows n such. Having taken a big azz file to a Yugo Mauser and turning it into something decent myself, I applaud you trying to polish the snot outta that turd.

Great Job, Guys !!

Makes me miss my machine shop more and more - sold to settle a bad divorce - a bullet would have been ............ (did I say that - I have two great kids from the marriage).

For future projects in "Brake making" - look at 50BMG brakes - borrow some ideas other manufacturers use to direct some of the gasses slightly back to reduce the recoil. You won't need the extreme that a 50BMG needs, but a slight reduction in recoil for no additional cost would make an interesting project.

Basically set your milling chuck on a sine plate set to 5 - 10 - 15 - ?? - degrees when you mill the slots. Use a radiused endmill to final mill the slots paying particular attention to depth where it intersects the bore of the brake. Done properly, it creates wedges that will strip the expanding gasses off the shot and disperse out the slots. Wish that rifle was here so I could take a picture for you.

But back to topic - Great Job !!! And a special Thank You to all involved to complete this project.

PS - The magazine idea won't work well due to a rimmed cartridge. Needs a curved magazine.

My $0.02 - the end.

Where in Mpls was the incident. I wonder if it was anyone I went to school with?
