As to the attempted Car-Jacking ................ Did you Pull, Did you Display, Did you Point, Did you reach for something on the floor and accidentally hit the accelerator pedal (can't say gas, I drive a diesel)?

Charles Darwin had a theory - Survival of the Fittest - it applies in this case!

Just cleared leather and hoped to not have to use it. No pointing, no displaying, no waving it around like a cowboy. Just did my best to drive around the guy and avoid conflict, but wanted "plan B" if "A" wasn't possible. No reason to escalate tthe situation if it isn't necessary.

and to be fair - i don't think the intent was to car jack. i thinkit was just some drunk/drugged out waste of space runnign around causing trouble in the middle of the night. dude was obviously pretty f-d up. never know what a whack job like that is capable of.

He was obviously trying to forcibly stop people and get them out of their cars for a less than savory purpose. Whatever he wanted wasn't good so I just figured the easiest way to explain it without going into verbal overflow was "carjack".

So Call it what you will, the intent to do something was obviously there.

Great Job - too many think that because they can carry, they can use. Great display of careful attention to the situation around you (Situational Awareness), and the avoidance of conflict.

Just because we have the license to carry, does not mean we have the rights of a policeman, to protect and to serve.

We carry to protect self and family from immediate strife, not to esculate the situation by going on the offense, which by doing so, would make you the bad guy.

BUT ............................

wow, very cool. Did you have a tap for the break or did you single point the ID of that too?

Did you put a small port on the top of the break to reduce muzzle flip?

We had a tap for the brake. There is no port on the top. Followup shots are not of great concern with this one, and most mosins I have shot are not so prone to muzzle flip, as they are shoulder dislocation.

Snowgun - I am NOT picking on you - please don't take it wrong.

We all have spelling issues, and use the wrong words in sentences, but because we are from the same sport we understand.

My car has "brakes". It stops me before something "breaks".
My gun has a muzzle "brake", I hope it doesn't "break" before "breaking" my shoulder.

Again, don't take it personally - it just "breaks" me up how people use the word "brake".

For the record, Strad did do some machining on this and was left to debur the piece when he went home. He got some time turning the wheels on the lathe and mill. Part of my intentions with helping on this was to give back and help a novice, as I had machinist's (a couple were complete strangers) do for me when I didn't have the shop I do now. Hopefully this will inspire others to lend a hand in kindness to someone every now and then - it's not all about money. Strad and Shippy showed up with pizza and pop, and we had a good time of learning and productivity (I learned a lot about my new Mosin from operating on it's brother). No hammers contacted glass. Strad also gave me a really nice holster and mag pouch, and it will be much appreciated once the shorts come back out in the spring.

The brake is cold rolled mystery steel, since I didn't know Strad wanted stainless when I selected it from the drops pile. It's soft, doesn't cut nice enough to be leaded, and wouldn't give me a good finish no matter how slow I fed the cutter (I can usually get a good surface out of mild steel).

I turned it down to an inch since that's a good size for a brake. We discussed how there's very little science indicated for brake design. There's no formula's for dissipation paths, volumes, and angles etc, so you pretty much pull a design out of your rear and see how it works. I'll be interested to hear how this one does at the range.

We could've done holes at an angle (even compound angles), but that would require moving the mill head (I have a super spacer, so radial holes would've been easy too) and I didn't feel like retramming the head over bubba.

Shippy's gun will go much faster, since we have a fixture to hold the receiver now. I also learned my steady rest won't go down to barrel diameter, so I need to make some new brass pads or build some roller rests for it.

Not sure what size lathe you have, but to avoid using the steady-rest, I've used a 4-jaw chuck on the front of headstock so I could dial in on proper-sized gage pin in bore of rifle barrel, and made an adapter on the rear of my spindle tube that acts like a 4-jaw chuck to center barrelled action and support while turning. Used soft aluminum or copper under setscrews to prevent damage to barrelled action. 1 layer of masking tap under aluminum or copper pads helps too.
Doing so - you must reduce rpm's to prevent damage to barrelled actions due to "whip".

Good job you did and I'm glad you "paid-it-forward" teaching others the "art of machining".
Too few people in this field right now that actually know how to do this.
Manual Machining is becoming a "Lost Art".
