M1 Garand from CMP

Postby tizzo on Mon Dec 05, 2011 10:28 pm

I'm looking into ordering an M1 Garand from CMP, thinking of getting a Correct grade rifle. Though I wonder, would I still want to shoot it? Should I just go for a Service grade? Anyone with experience and opinions please chime in.

Thanks
Kyle

I picked up a special grade earlier this year - it shoots like a dream. You will not be disappointed with whatever you buy.

I love mine too. I also just like looking at it. Whenever I just open the safe to fondle my babies the m1 always gets some love.

I received this service grade Springfield in the fall of 2010. It came with a newer CMP stock. Shoots real good, too. As I understand it was kind of luck of the draw on getting a new stock.

I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a correct grade rifle, but I wouldn't shoot the heck out of it. If you want one to put a lot of rounds through, I'd get the service grade.
The last service grades I got from them were gorgeous!

Everyone should have at least 1 M1 rifle. I personally prefer shooters over collectors but thats just me.

Once you decide and receive your rifle, I happen to know a guy who runs a CMP program where you can learn to shoot it.

Best experiences I have ever had buying a firearm/ammo/misc gear has been with the CMP over the last year. I bought a 'Special Grade" since I am most interested in shooting as much as I can. Plus, my boys love to shoot it too. A 'Correct' grade may be in the works in the future, but that will be mainly a decoration to admire.

Unless you have a woody for the scope, mount and cheesy flash funnel I wouldn't recommend paying extra for a M1C or M1D. Underneath the add ons they are just a regular production M1 rifle.

well maybe its a mental thing but I saw one of those shoot a 590 at a 600yrd F-Class match with Iron one time at Palo Alto, man had purchased it a week before and it was bone stock as she lays. I have never seen anything close with a standard user class M1

I'm not saying that the M1 can't be made into an accurate rifle because they can be. I'm saying that the M1 sniper variants were just rifles pulled of the production line and modified as they were needed. Sadly, poor records were kept about the modified rifles and a lot of what you see for sale nowadays are forgeries.

If anyone is interested, here is a picture from the "Vintage Sniper match" at Camp Perry last summer. http://cmp1.zenfolio.com/p1008000831/h3AD3775C#h3ad3775c
