M1A or AR.308?

What would be a better combat rifle, an M1A or an AR.308?

Depends. What sort of combat do you expect to be involved in?

perhaps masked gunmen kicking in my front door? or maybe tromping through the woods with a group of other patriots?

M1a's are nice rifles!

But I love my AR-10's for larger predators.
Lighter, easier to handle, many options.

But BOTH are too powerful for Home Defense !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(you may end up shooting thru walls and hitting an innocent bystander/family/neighbor.)

for general home defense I have a ar.223 or a .45. I"ll probably use the .45 to fight my way to a rifle if I'm able. I dont think a .223 is much of a defense against body armour though.

I really like the ergonomics of an AR type platform.

Masked and armored gangs of gunmen kicking in your door?!? Sounds like a tough neighborhood! Are you sure a .308 will be enough?

What about reliability in extended shooting sessions? (AR vs. M1A)

That measley little .223 will go through pretty much ALL civiliam body armor. The .45 will be stopped by ALL civilian body armor.

What the **** are you talking about?

Was there an increase in body armor home invasions?
I love it when a plan comes together!

yeah, i'm wondering who's breaking into your house?! are you being chased by mercenaries?!! really. home intruders are going to be wearing a jacket if it's too cold, otherwise a hooded sweatshirt. they want to be a light as possible. also, if you pull a weapon on them, they are TYPICALLY not going to fight back. most home invasions are conducted by cowards. if they were braver, they'd be muggers, not burglers.
also, i'm not sold on the idea of a carbine (even an SBR) for home defense. now, if it were to defend your property in BFE, that would make sence. for protecting your home, i'd stick with the proven methods: 12ga pump with #4 buck as stated earlier, a handgun (i prefer a large revolver, less likely to fumble with a 6" bbl 357mag than a j-frame 38sp snubbie) and a flashlight, and both of those work even better together AND combined with a dog. small dogs are surprisingly effective! they're loud and annoying, and they'll wake you up. my dog is a Lab/Rottweiler and seldom barks. he's big and the neighborhood kids are all scared of him, but he's too quiet for a guard-dog

the other thing that helps is to move out of the GHETTO! if your in the Norf Side, or off Franklin, or even worse, in St Paul's FROG TOWN, get OUT. i'm unwise enough to buy a house in Brooklyn Park, but i DID buy a house in a nice, non-business area. only one apt complex anywhere near
