Olga's Surgery

Postby Anokamnman on Wed Dec 14, 2011 12:14 pm

This is where I will keep you updated how the surgical process is going and the recovery. Olga is a 91/30 with a manufacture date of 1938. She is in pretty nice shape. Decided to test fire Olga before I start hacking her apart in my quest to make her GORGEOUS. Bought 40 rounds of 7.62x54r and went to Bill's South on Monday during the day with RUKWIKENUF. I expected the recoil to be worse than its was. Don't get me wrong... it kicks. But not as bad as the Remington 7mm Mag I had. The recoil on Olga was managable. I was also suprised at the accuracy of the rifle. It was shooting very well. I had second thoughts about cutting her up... But then I reminded myself... She would look so much better as a .45-70! I also have another modification I will be doing to her... But I will keep that under wraps for right now.

Here are some before pics.

She is in decent shape. Will start tearing her apart this afternoon.

She is pretty clean. The only issue was that there was a lot of hard build up on the face of the bolt which was then covered with a half inch layer of Ecto-plasm.

The stock is in pretty amazing shape. I was pleasantly suprised.

Say goodbye to these sights. They will be gone very soon.

tried to get a pic of the markings but didn't turn out so well.

Pics from the range. This is RUKWIKENUF shooting. You can tell because I have all my hair.

Kind of thinking about purchasing another Mosin just to keep it stock and pull it out for some cheap shooting entertainment.

I LOVE IT!

Keep us posted! I'm really anxious to see what all you folks come up with..........

And to see if even HALF of you can pull off the crazy **** you have told me you are going to do to these poor rifles.

I will pull it off. Just not sure if it will go BANG or not. At least I know I get 3 points for CLUB VALUE.

Well Olga is under the knife. She is such a slut. Took like 2 minutes to get her naked. That was too easy.

Step one: Strip her down. COMPLETE
Image
Step two: Body work

Will start sanding her down. Shouldn't be too difficult to get the wood stripped and sanded. It was in great shape. just a couple of nicks and scratches. Get it all prepped for a nice Black stain. (remember this started as a cheap replacement for a new black gun) While I wait for the stain to dry I will begin removal of the barrel. Might be tough getting the barrel removed with the 70+ years of rust. Looks like I will have to find my 4 foot breaker bar. The barrel will be replaced with a 22" bull barrel which I will begin machining at a later date.

I shall keep you all updated as I get more done.

looks great stripped down!
and yeah, this gun shot quite well, even though we were only at Bill's. i'd like to see what kind of accuracy these things have at distance, for the recoil is minimal

Well the first phase of body work has been complete. I am done sanding. Cut the stock down a bit. It is looking really nice. I am pretty suprised at how nice it is turning out so far. I stopped by Menards and picked up some Classic Black Glossy stain. Phase two.... has commenced.

You can see the difference from the stained piece and the stripped piece in this pic. Hopefully will have pics tomorrow of the stock with its sexy black stain on it. Just imagining how nice it will look with a jet black stain and a nice shiny bull barrel on it.

And now the journey to black gun has begun.

First coat of classic black glossy stain has been applied.

I haven't used the 'subscribe' button in a long time. Time to see if it still works.

Well I am glad you like it. My plan is to take pics at each step and document everything very well. That way... if it does work... this thread might be able to help someone else do the same thing down the road. I will be ordering my .45-70 barrel blank this weekend. Guessing I will recieve it in a couple weeks. Then around the first of the year I will start machining it. I found the specs for the thread on the barrel online. But when I pull the old barrel off tomorrow I will measure it to make sure it is the same.

I have to admit... I have never done anything like this before. I make little tiny parts on my Swiss machine at work. This is a little out of my normal realm. But I figure what better way to learn than to jump right into it.

So next will be machining the barrel and modifying the stock to hold a bull barrel. Then put it all together. Then test fire it and pray to the good lord it doesn't blow up and I have to start all over. My wife would kill me. Then the next step will be to come up with a XXXXXXX CENSORED XXXXXX for the XXXXXXX CLASSIFIED XXXXXXXXX. Once that is done I will have to XXXXXXXXX ACE UP MY SLEEVE XXXXXXXX. Then it will be done and ready to win the 1st annual Karkov Kup.

I am excited.

Are we really making it an annual thing? I man, how many different ways are there to skin commie cat? Or is next year a different gun?

I am going to do another custom build next year. Thinking maybe tricking out something like an AK. Haven't decided.
