in all honestly, it's a pretty cool look, i was at his place for a couple hours earlier. however, there's NO way i'd stain something with a Polyshade unless it was the baseboard in my house. if it's supposed to look really good, it wont. however, this Mosin is totally a turd. the idea is to make that turd into something else. i wouldn't spend hours and hours on a stock getting it the right finish.

Yes this is a polished turd competition. And mine is definitely polished. Even found a can of old school Brasso. To polish up the brass on it. Soon I will be starting on the new barrel.

Well I got the last coat on and dried. It looks pretty nice for a polished turd. I wont be starting on the new barrel and everything until after the first of the year. So to make sure I don't lose any of the screws... I just reassemble the rifle. I got to say... It looks pretty sweet as it is now.

I really like that black stain and have actually thought about using some myself on either a stock or maybe a guitar body. What company makes the Classic Black Glossy Stain? Is it this Minwax stuff?

Nonsense. This mahogany body with a 1/4" carved AAA flame maple top I've got sitting here will look great with that finish! Seriously though, I was thinking a beater/punk refinish - something that could be put on in the basement without using rattle cans or a sprayer and would reasonably cover up the wood filler/bondo.

It looks like the ebony stain completely obscures the woodgrain, unlike the normal ebony stains that usually let a little bit of it show through. If you were to sand the butt of the Mosin stock flat and add a piece of wood to make it longer, would the joint (assuming it was sanded smooth & even) disappear underneath that finish?

I have removed a few stubborn Mauser barrels. The best way I have found is to chuck the receiver in a lathe. Make a parting cut about 1/8" deep at the receiver/barrel junction. It has worked on every tough barrel I have ever done. After a couple times messing around with the hammer, torch, breaker bar combo, I part first then go to any/all of the above.
